So parents may well have a strong empathetic bond when they themselves have ADHD. On the other hand, there may be a distinct disadvantage in that their own lack of organisational skills will be a practical problem in running the home. Organising schedules and general parenting skills which are essential elements in bringing up children may be lacking or absent.
It is interesting to note that a study in the UK Journal of Family Psychology showed that kids who were brought up by their grandparents were less likely to have ADHD symptoms than those who were not. Certainly in Italy, where I live and where grandparents happily act as babysitters, there is a much lower incidence of ADHD. It could also be due to the Mediterranean diet which has much less processed food than in America or in the UK.
However likely the hereditary link may be, there is the vexed question of how to treat ADHD. ADHD meds are now under increasing scrutiny for their harmful side effects and their efficacy is now being called into question.
