Is ADHD hereditary? Many parents ask this question and it is safe to say that there IS a genetic link in ADHD. However, I have seen various estimates which range from 30%-40% possibility to as low as 20%.

That means in practice that there is at least a one in five chance that a child who is diagnosed with ADHD may well have a parent or close relative who actually has had the same condition and may be completely unaware of it! This happens to some parents when their children are diagnosed.

What scientific research has been done on this? Is ADHD hereditary? Israeli scientists have actually discovered that there are two genes which may well be responsible for ADHD but more work will need to be done to show up the genetic and hereditary link.

Certainly, when we look at the wide range of symptoms of ADHD, it seems that there well could be a genetic link. Hyperactivity, restlessness, inattention, distractability, over-excitability and inappropriate social behavior would seem to suggest that there is a genetic link there. Certainly, the answer to the question 'is ADHD hereditary?' would seem to be a positive one.

So parents may well have a strong empathetic bond when they themselves have ADHD. On the other hand, there may be a distinct disadvantage in that their own lack of organisational skills will be a practical problem in running the home. Organising schedules and general parenting skills which are essential elements in bringing up children may be lacking or absent.

It is interesting to note that a study in the UK Journal of Family Psychology showed that kids who were brought up by their grandparents were less likely to have ADHD symptoms than those who were not. Certainly in Italy, where I live and where grandparents happily act as babysitters, there is a much lower incidence of ADHD. It could also be due to the Mediterranean diet which has much less processed food than in America or in the UK.

However likely the hereditary link may be, there is the vexed question of how to treat ADHD. ADHD meds are now under increasing scrutiny for their harmful side effects and their efficacy is now being called into question. ADHD behavior therapy and ADHD homeopathic remedies are gaining in popularity as parents demand safe, effective and long term treatment. While the question 'is ADHD hereditary?' may be important, the treatment options and safety standards are much more pertinent for our children's future.
